Pigmentation Removal

Span Aesthetics offers freckle removal treatments at both Melbourne locations. The latest Revlite Laser is amazing at reducing pigmentation spots and blotches, with no down-time and no pain.

The RevLite SI is an advanced Q-switch Nd:YAG laser system and is the preferred treatment option for any unwanted pigment. The RevLite system utilises the latest and most revolutionary technology using a unique PTP setting (PhotoAcoustic Technology Pulse) which provides extra power for an effective treatment.

What causes irregular pigmentation?

Pigmentation occurs as a result of sun exposure, ageing, hormones (melasma), pregnancy (chloasma) and skin damage.

How does the treatment work?

The RevLite Q-switched Nd:YAG laser system produces a special wavelength of light that is absorbed by the pigmented lesions. The laser energy is pulsed over the skin using PhotoAcoustic Technology to gently vibrate and fragment the pigment which breaks the melanin into micro-particles. These micro-particles are then gradually eliminated by the body’s natural filtering process, resulting in lightening or elimination of the pigmented lesion.

What areas can be treated?

Common pigment lesions that are treated with the RevLite are:

  • Freckles (ephelides)
  • Sunspots and age spots (common the face, décolletage and hands)
  • Brown birth marks
  • Seborrheic keratosis
  • Uneven skin tone
  • Photo damage

What results should I expect?

The longer the pigment has been present the harder it is to remove, but satisfactory reduction can usually be achieved in most patients.

Generally a 40% improvement can be gained in just 8 short weeks, but more rapid solutions are achievable if desired.

The pigment improves gradually over time and sun exposure will make it recur after freckle removal treatment (after-care creams will be recommended and freshen-up peels after treatment can keep improving the skin colour).

Treatment Information

How many treatments will I need?

Most pigmented lesions fade within 1-2 treatments however some deeper (dermal) lesions will require more treatments. Treatments are usually spaced between 4-6 weeks.

Does it hurt?

The RevLite laser emits very short pulses of light which are generally tolerated well with minimal discomfort.

What can I expect after the treatment?

After treatment the skin can have a warm glow resembling mild sunburn before diminishing within 12-24 hours. The pigmented lesion may go darker after treatment and gradually flake off.

What Precautions Should I Take?

  • Every day, apply SPF 30 or higher broad spectrum sunscreen
  • Wear a broad-rimmed hat to keep your face in shade (not see-through material and a baseball cap won’t do!)

Can the RevLite SI treat Melasma?

PhotoAcoustic lasers such as the Revlite can be used to manage deeper pigment like melasma however doctors are still yet to find a cure. Although a combination of RevLite and prescribed skin care can manage the condition well.

What’s Involved In The Treatment?

  • The pigment can be near the surface (easier to remove) or deeper in the skin (harder to remove) and is often at various levels in most patients.
  • Dr Spano has developed an amazing freckle removal fast-acting cream formula that is compounded by a pharmacist to such a strength that it cleans up dirty looking pigmentation rapidly.
  • Over the counter creams are usually not strong enough to make significant difference to pigment problems. We will custom-make a prescription strength cream for you that suits your skin.
  • Jessner peels and even Revlite or Fraxel Laser in combination are sometimes used to complete the process if required, but its really our extensive experience since 1996 that counts.
  • Pigmented spots on the face and hands and chest can be removed with IPL lights systems if used in the correct way and by very experienced therapists such as those we have at Span Aesthetics.
