How long do the results of a hair transplant last? Essentially, forever. We’re taking hair from what we call the permanent safe zones at the back of the head and the sides of the head. For some reason, these grafts are not as sensitive to environmental factors that cause hair loss, and that’s great for us because it means that we’ve got a stock of hair that we can go to, to replace hair on top that is more sensitive to those environmental factors. Once that hair is transplanted, it really should last you for the rest of your life. You should get a great outcome within 12 to 14 months, and that hair will not fall out.
Although we want patients to be on medication, that medication is not to keep the transplanted hair. The transplanted hair will grow regardless of whether you’re on medication or not. The reason we want you to be on medication is to keep as much of your existing hair on top as possible and to stop you from losing that hair. Because the more hair that you’ve got on top of your head, the better it’s going to be for you, and the cheaper it’s going to be for you as well. Medication costs roughly $100 a month. That’s a darn sight cheaper than transplanting our way out of ongoing baldness.
Because patients don’t want to go on medication, please consider medication as a really worthwhile option, because although the transplanted hair will last forever, the rest of your hair will not.
